June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – Learn How To Recognize the Signs

Published Date: Jun 12, 2024

CCUA Education supports professional development and awareness of the issue of elder abuse, with the 45-minute award-winning course Financial Abuse of Older Adults: Recognize, Review, Respond

The course, produced by Tamlo®, explores situations involving abuse of assets, abuse of credit and abuse of power of attorney. It equips employees to:

  • Recognize situations in which older credit union members are being financially abused.
  • Identify the type and method of financial abuse in each situation.
  • Report the financial abuse to a supervisor or manager.
  • Select an appropriate response.
  • Inform the member of the options available to alleviate the abuse.
  • Provide the member with a list of appropriate community resources.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the credit union’s legal and ethical limits in reporting and responding to financial abuse.
  • Monitor the outcome of the member’s situation.

This course was filmed on location at a credit union branch in Manitoba and is pre-approved by The Canadian Securities Institute (CSI) for a CE credit if you hold a PFP, CIWM, CIM, or MTI designation.

“I appreciate how relevant the content is with actual real life situations that we see on a regular basis.” Barb – Manager, Deposit Services, Revelstoke Credit Union

“I often deal with farm members who have succession plans.  These scenarios have the potential for elder financial abuse, particularly in a situation where the older member’s mental or physical health has become compromised.” Patrick Morden – Senior Account Manager – Commercial & Ag, Swan Valley Credit Union
