Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

The day honours the children who never returned home and Survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

At the 2018 CCUA Annual General Meeting, a member resolution was passed on Truth and Reconciliation. It was resolved that CCUA adopt the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples as a reconciliation framework, including a few action points outlined in Section 92 of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

The Action Points are:

i. Commit to meaningful consultation, building respectful relationships and obtaining the free, prior and informed consent of Indigenous peoples before proceeding with any economic development projects.

ii. Ensure that Aboriginal peoples have equitable access to jobs, training and education opportunities at CCUA and that Aboriginal communities gain long-term sustainable benefits from any economic development projects.

iii. Provide education for management and staff on the history of Aboriginal peoples, including the history and legacy of residential schools, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Treaties and Aboriginal rights, Indigenous law and Aboriginal-Crown relations.

Update:

Since the 2019 Report, CCUA has continued implementing initiatives focused on education. Some of these are:

•CCUA offers Reconciliation Courses available to all members. About 5286 learners and 96 credit unions have been impacted through the Reconciliation Courses via CCUA Campus.

•Held webinars commemorating Truth and Reconciliation Day (open to staff and members) for the past two years.

•New CCUA hires must complete the Truth and Reconciliation Awareness Training Program (also available to members).

•Communications:

•CCUA awareness initiatives.

•CCUA webpage focused on Reconciliation with many Resources.
