Upcoming: Fraud Prevention Month 2021 – Courses and Events

Throughout the past month, we’ve continued to share resources and information to raise awareness for Fraud Prevention Month. Below is a curated list of courses designed to help keep your credit union and your members safe from fraudulent attacks.

Flag the Money™
The Flag the Money series reflects FINTRAC’s latest amendments to the anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing regulations. These changes are set to take effect in June 2021. Sign up now and be the first to find out what’s new and what’s changed once the updates become available in June.

Flag Financial Crime
This micro-learning series provides ongoing training opportunities with more detailed guidance on specific AML topics such as identify fraud, and related financial crime subjects such as romance fraud and human trafficking. Each course is just 3-9 minutes in length, and new titles are added quarterly.

Card Fraud
This 20-minute online course provides an overview of card fraud, the common methods criminals use to steal cards and card data, and introduction to ATM and POS terminal tampering, best practices for protecting our members from card fraud and more!

Fraud Awareness
This 20-minute interactive, online course provides employees wit an overview of fraud, including the different types and the potential impacts; common methods criminals use to commit fraud; and techniques and best practices for protecting our members—and the credit union—from fraud.

Your Role in Privacy and Information Security
Updated in 2021, this 75-minute eLearning module will provide the information employees at all levels of the organization need to manage privacy risks. While working through this interactive eLearning module, employees learn how to spot information security threats and gain an understanding of what leads to a privacy breach. This course reviews the 10 privacy principles, aligning each to a credit union scenario.

Below is also a list of the final upcoming events in relation to FPM 2021:

  • Monday March 22 at 1 pm EDT, the Ontario Securities Commission is inviting partners to participate in their financial fraud prevention Twitter. For more information or to contribute, please contact Justin Leung-Yinko.
  • On Monday 29, Toronto Police Service to issue a public announcement on red flags of identity theft.
  • On March 31, CAFC will host aTwitter #FraudChat at 1 p.m. (EDT) on fraud initiated by mail or in person.
  • On March 31, Toronto Police Service will host #Fraudathon from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (EDT) covering topics such as: identity theft, grandparent scams, home renovation scams, and advance fee loans, to name a few.
