The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (OPC) is holding a public consultation on a new draft guidance on how to handle and process biometric information. The draft guidance is split into two documents: draft guidance for processing biometrics for organizations under the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and draft guidance for processing biometrics for public institutions under the Privacy Act.
Specifically, the OPC is looking for feedback on using biometrics for an appropriate purpose, obtaining the necessary consent and unfair, unethical, or discriminatory treatment from profiling. Feedback is requested by survey and can be submitted by January 12th, 2024.
CCUA will further analyze the draft guideline in the coming weeks and update the sector.
