New Employment Standards Coming into Force June 30
New employment standards under the updated Employment Standards Act will come into force on Tuesday, June 30th. Some key changes that will come into
Last Friday afternoon, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador had a major cabinet shake-up. The shuffle was due to the retirement of longtime cabinet minister Tom Osbourne, who last served as the Minister of Health and Community Services.
Also on Friday, Premier Andrew Furey announced changes to 8 of the 16 ministerial appointments, including one new addition to the cabinet.
A significant change for our members is the change to the Department of Digital Government and Service NL. Elvis Loveless was shuffled from Fisheries and Forestry and is now acting as the Minister of Digital Government and Service NL, responsible for the Credit Union Act, Consumer Protection, Digital ID, and other important acts and regulations that impact credit unions.
Minister Sarah Stoodley was shuffled from her role in Digital Government and Service NL to Immigration and Population Growth.
CCUA is drafting an introductory letter to Min. Loveless and will share a draft for review by the end of the week.

Consultation for Proposed Changes to PEI’s Power of Attorney and Personal Directives Regulations
This month, PEI’s Department of Justice and Public Safety opened a public consultation for four different pieces of legislation and regulations, including regulation changes to the Power of Attorney and Personal Directives Act.
CCUA analyzed the proposed changes. Overall, we concluded that the changes are meant to modernize and align PEI with most other jurisdictions in Canada, as well as enhance protections for vulnerable persons. This includes expanding and defining criminal acts that would prohibit a person from becoming a power of attorney, as well as increasing required documentation of the principal whilst a power of attorney oversees their finances.
Atlantic Central’s team is also analyzing the regulation changes to assess the potential operational and procedural impacts on our credit unions.
The consultation closes on July 31st and is expected to be enacted this fall. We will continue to monitor the changes in regulations and update our members once they are enforced.
