The new legislation aimed at mitigating financial harm inflicted on victims of human trafficking is one step closer to becoming law in Saskatchewan. Bill 152, was debated in Committee last week with one amendment, which would prevent creditors from attempting to collect on coerced debt. Human trafficking victims can apply for a certificate to verify a coerced debt, which will be provided to credit reporting agencies and financial institutions. The certificate will mitigate damage to the victims’ credit. CCUA has inquired with Saskatchewan Justice about other options that may be available to creditors and was advised that more details would be included in the pending regulations. Saskatchewan Justice has committed to engaging CCUA to receive input from the credit union sector on the regulatory framework.
