On November 19^th, the 61^st Legislative Session began in New Brunswick. For the first time in the province’s history, the House is led by a woman premier, Susan Holt. This session also includes the most woman MLAs ever elected, and the first Francophone woman Speaker. 

The session opened with a Speech from the Throne, entitled “Ready for Change”. The Speech encapsulates the major themes of Premier Holt’s successful election campaign. The six priorities are: health care, affordability and housing, education, economic development, environment and trusted leadership. To read the full speech, click here. 

The Holt government has already quickly begun to bring forward legislation that they promised during the election campaign, which was focused on affordability. The bills are: 

• Introducing a 3% rent cap, beginning February 1^st, 2025. 

• Stopping the cost of federal clean fuel regulations from being passed on to consumers, saving consumers roughly 4.5 cents per litre.
