Conservatives Release Full Platform Document

October 16, 2019

The Conservative Party released its federal election platform on Friday October 11. The complete document can be found here.

Although there is little mention of the financial services sector in the platform document, there are a number of measures which may impact credit unions:

  • Expanding rural broadband;
  • Removing the mortgage stress test from mortgage renewals;
  • Extending the amortization of mortgages on insured mortgages for first-time home buyers to 30 years;
  • Re-instating the small business deduction;
  • Providing for a two-year green home renovation tax credit;
  • Reducing regulatory burden by 25% over a 4 year mandate;
  • Make Agri-Stability more simple, predictable, bankable, and timely;
  • Establish binding cyber security standards for critical infrastructure sectors and penalties for non-compliance.

CCUA met with the MP and former Minister Ed Fast in the late spring to discuss the credit union issues ahead of platform development and there have been a number of Hike the Hill at Home meetings between credit unions and Conservative candidates. We will continue to advocate with the Conservative party and all federal parties for strong representation on credit union issues.
