Athana Mentzelopoulos will be joining CCUA starting September 11, 2017 as Vice President of Government Relations.
Athana has worked in the federal and provincial governments for almost 25 years, in Ottawa, Vancouver and Victoria. She has extensive experience in regulatory matters and has also worked in policy development and in communications.
Athana started her career as a ministerial assistant in Ottawa in 1994. She worked in the offices of ministers of Public Works, Health, Fisheries and Oceans, and Environment. After joining the federal public service, she worked at DFO and Environment Canada. First recruited to the British Columbia public service as a deputy minister in 2004, she served most recently as Deputy Minister of Finance. In that role she also had responsibility for FICOM and the BC Securities Commission.
Throughout her career, Athana has worked closely with stakeholders and community representatives, and has developed a keen understanding of the government's approach and impact.
Athana holds an Honours BA in Political Science and Economics from Carleton University, and an MA in Contemporary Social and Political Thought from the University of Victoria.
Given Athana’s responsibility for both CCUA’s provincial and federal government relations, she will be based in Toronto, travelling often to Ottawa and other provincial capitals.
