Kate Martin, Senior Policy Advisor, Community Impact, Canadian Credit Union Association
CCUA’s Credit Union Community Impact Committee is made up of credit union colleagues who are working together to offer events, learning opportunities, and run programs that help credit unions enhance credit unions’ social and environmental performance. There’s a lot going on this summer and fall. Here are a couple webinars, and an update on Each One, Teach One to help your credit union get informed and get involved in credit union system-wide community impact initiatives:
August 30: Refugees are Welcome Here! webinar
This spring, Affinity Credit Union, DUCA Financial, Atlantic Central and Libro Credit Union joined forces with Vancity to help support the Canadian Council for Refugee’s Refugees Welcome Here program.
As new members of our communities continue to arrive, credit unions have the opportunity to join forces with Amnesty International and the Canadian Council for Refugees to support Refugees Welcome Here, a project that focuses on outreach efforts to promote welcoming attitudes towards refugees among Canadians. Refugees Welcome Here also advocates for Canada’s resettlement commitments to be increased to include at least 20,000 Government Assisted Refugees annually and to process the backlog of privately sponsorship applications by end 2018.
For more information about the Canadian Council for Refugee's Refugees Welcome Here program and how you can orientate your credit union products and services to welcome newcomers join Catherine Ludgate, Manager of Community Investment at Vancity credit union and Janet Dench, Canadian Council for Refugees for a webinar on August 30, 2017 from 1 – 2 pm Eastern.
September 19: Community Impact Community of Practice Call: Is B Corporation Certification right for my credit union? As a first for financial institutions in Canada, four credit unions have become certified B Corporations (B Corps): DUCA Credit Union, OMISTA, CUA and Kindred Credit Union. B Corps are for-profit companies certified by the non-profit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. Learn more about B Corps here.
To help your credit union determine if the B Corp model is right for you, please join credit union colleagues on September 19 from 1 – 2 pm Eastern for a Credit Union Community Impact Community of Practice Call.
In the format of a Community of Practice call, we'll first hear from three credit union representatives who've considered the model and then open the floor for questions. This webinar is designed to help connect you with other credit union representatives who are considering the B Corp model, helping to build a community of practice on this topic.
September 6 – 8 and 11 – 13: More dates added for Each One, Teach One
Each One, Teach One Coaches: training their colleagues to deliver Each One, Teach One financial literacy workshops and delivering workshops themselves.
In September, we’re offering additional sessions to train credit union staff as Each One, Teach One coaches. Registration is now open!
