The Competition Bureau has published its 2025-2026 Annual Plan, which outlines the Bureau's vision and goals for the coming year. The plan outlines that the Bureau will:
Protect Canadians Through Enforcement Action
- Use all available tools to prevent, identify, and address anti-competitive activity. This includes ensuring the merger program has sustainable long-term funding so that mergers can be investigated and assessed more effectively.
- Focus on sectors of the economy that matter to Canadians including financial services, health, artificial intelligence, telecommunications, and infrastructure.
Promote Competition in Canada
- Encourage policymakers and regulators to adopt pro-competitive policies that drive economic growth.
- Advocate for pro-competitive policies at all levels of government to drive productivity and economic growth.
- Launch a consultation and initiate research on the use of algorithmic pricing in the Canadian economy and its impact on competition and consumers.
- Create and deepen international and domestic relationships.
- Increase outreach and promotion efforts to engage a wider and more diverse audience of Canadian consumers and businesses.
Invest in the (Competition Bureau) organization
- Make employee health and safety a top priority in its work.
- Promote reconciliation, equity, accessibility, diversity, inclusion, and support for official languages throughout the organization.
- Ensure capabilities keep up with new business practices, enforcement strategies, and technology.
The CCUA intends to continue advocacy to the Competition Bureau to review mergers in the context of the larger financial sector to which they belong so that provincial credit union mergers aren't stalled. The Bureau's 2025-2026 plan is well aligned with our advocacy and we look forward to engaging them in the coming year.
