Workplace Violence Prevention Policy Required in all Workplaces by May 17

On May 17, 2024, amendments to the occupational health and safety provisions of The Saskatchewan Employment Act will require all provincially regulated workplaces to have a violence policy and prevention plan. Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety has identified the financial services sector as a high-risk industry for workplace violence. Guidelines and sample violence policies are available on saskatchewan.ca  For more information please get in touch with Sherrisse Kiefer.

Advocacy Continues Streamlining Membership Termination Processes

Officials at the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority have requested additional information regarding CCUA’s proposed amendment to streamline the membership termination process if a member is abusive to staff or is conducting suspicious activity. Currently, Section 69 (1) of the act requires a Board resolution to terminate a membership and that former member can appeal the termination to the next meeting of the credit union members. After consulting with credit unions, CCUA has recommended amending the legislation to empower management to implement membership termination while allowing the termination to be appealed to the Board of Directors.  With the input of the Government Relations Advisory Committee, CCUA is providing a written submission to FCAA on this matter.

The governments of Manitoba and Prince Edward Island have also recently introduced legislative amendments to allow credit union senior management to quickly deal with conduct that is abusive, discriminatory or a threat to the health or safety of others in the member’s dealings with the credit union.  For more information, please contact Leslie Trobak.
